Jennifer Hepburn was
born in Norwich, UK in 1980, the daughter of an American mother and a
Scottish father. Since both her parents are involved in the theatre
(see www.angushepburn.com
for more info), it's hardly surprising that she 'caught the bug' and is
now making her own career on stage in the U.S. and the U.K. From her
earliest years sleeping in a cot at the back of rehearsals rooms,
theatre was not something she could avoid and she had made several
stage and television appearances before she was ten. Notably, as the
crying infant in her mother's arms in The Burston Rebellion
- (with Eileen Atkins looking very concerned), and a walk along the
Norwich shore past Alan Howard in Poppyland, both
for BBC TV.
The family moved to Illinois, USA in 1985 where
they stayed until 1992. Jennifer studied piano, was a member of the
Illinois Children's Chorus and appeared in a number of productions both
at her school and the University of Illinois and Parkland Theatres.
After moving to New York in 1992, Jennifer became even more involved
with singing and musical theatre, playing Reno Sweeney (Anything
Goes), The Pirate King (Pirates of Penzance)
and Sky Masterson (Guys and Dolls) at her all-girl
High School in Dobbs Ferry.
This was followed by NYU for a Bachelor's degree in Music (Musical
Theatre Program) which included regular appearances in the department's
productions, the composers' workshops and singing at various graduation
ceremonies including her own. During this time she was also a member of
the NYU Chamber Choir. And naturally the summers involved a season at
the Mac-Haydn Theatre and a tour of The Will Rogers Follies with
Gateway Theatre.
Immediately after graduation Jen did a summer
season at Hershey Park playing the lead in their "Girls Night
Out!" show and then went to the Contemporary American Theatre
Company in Ohio for something completely different, playing Yitzak in
their very successful production of "Hedwig and the Angry
Inch".
Various shows in New York followed and then, in 2003,
Jen went to London to take the one year graduate course at the
prestigious Royal Academy of Music run by Mary Hammond. She
participated in the RAM/South Bank Centre's homage to Luciano Berio,
singing several of his arrangements of Kurt Weill's songs. The course
finished in June when Jen went on a 5-venue tour doing backing vocals
for Elton John's 2004 roadshow and immediately after, started work on
the UK tour of Jekyll and Hyde which lasted until late spring of
2005. In the spring of 2006 she joined the anniversary tour of
Cats as understudy to Grizabella, Jellyorum and Jennyanydots.
Jen married Peter McEldowney in June 2007 and immediately thereafter
went into the West End production of Les Miserable playing
several roles and understudying Fantine which she played for several
weeks. From then, in 2008 she appeared in A development workshop
of a new musical based on the music of Cat Stevens and then played
Lucie in A Tale of Two Cities at the Gatehouse theatre in London.
And of course the major event of 2009 was the bith of Cillian James McEldowney!
